Name formats you can generate

The homepage tool covers all general character naming. Pick one format before you generate:

  • First name only — rogues, soldiers, exiles, and low-rank NPCs.
  • Full name — first name plus house surname for nobles and rivals.
  • House surname — shared family label; pair with a first name from the same batch.

Need a city on your map or a house surname for NPC factions? Use the city & house generator.

Which generator should I use?

Pick the tool that matches what you are building:

  • Home (here): any drow character — set gender, faction, and format yourself.
  • Female drow: matriarchs, priestesses, and noble women.
  • D&D 5e: Forgotten Realms and tabletop campaigns.
  • BG3: Baldur's Gate 3 — Seldarine or Lolth-sworn.
  • Naming guide: how apostrophes, houses, and gender sound work.

Drow naming in plain terms

Drow are dark elves of the Underdark. A personal first name is what you call the character day to day. Nobles add a house surname — often with an apostrophe between syllables. In D&D 5e, drow live in matriarchal cities under Lolth, the Spider Queen, or break away as Seldarine drow in Baldur's Gate 3. For apostrophe rules, gender sound, half-drow, and faction tone, read the naming conventions guide.

Key terms

A quick glossary if you are new to drow lore.

Drow
Dark elves of the Underdark; most use a sharp, sibilant first name.
House name
Noble family surname, often with an apostrophe (e.g. Baen'quel).
Underdark
The realm below the surface where drow cities and factions thrive.
Lolth
The Spider Queen — many traditional drow names sound colder under her faith.
Seldarine drow
Drow who left Lolth; common in Baldur's Gate 3 with slightly softer name tone.

Common questions

  • What is a drow name generator?
It builds original dark elf names for D&D, Baldur's Gate 3, and fiction. You get a first name, and optionally a house surname, without using canon character names.
  • Do these names copy official characters?
No. Names are original. Famous canon characters and houses are blocked.
  • How do house names work?
Many nobles use a house surname after their first name. The house part often has an apostrophe in the middle, like Xar'quel.
  • Female vs male drow names?
Female names are often longer and more formal. Male names are usually shorter and sharper. Use the gender filter here, or visit the female drow name generator for matriarchal bias.
  • Lolth-sworn vs Seldarine?
Lolth-sworn names sound darker. Seldarine names (common in BG3) can be a little softer. For BG3-only help, see the BG3 drow name generator.
  • Where are male or half-drow naming tips?
Male names: set gender to Male on this page. Half-drow and naming rules: read the drow naming conventions guide.
  • Can I use these in my campaign?
Yes, for personal creative use. This is an unofficial fan-made tool.
