Naming guide
Drow Naming Conventions
Drow names combine a personal first name with an optional house surname. Female names tend to be longer; male names shorter and sharper. Half-drow often blend surface elf and Underdark sounds.

Open drow name generatorThe basic shape of a drow name
Most drow have a first name used in daily life. Nobles add a house surname that shows family. The house part often includes an apostrophe to break syllables, like Xar'quel. You do not need a house name for every character — exiles, soldiers, and surface wanderers often use a first name only.
Words you will see in drow lore
Underdark is the realm below the surface. Lolth is the Spider Queen many drow serve. Seldarine drow (in Baldur's Gate 3) are drow who left Lolth. Matron is a female head of a house. These terms help you place names in context — they are not required in the name itself.
Key terms
A quick glossary if you are new to drow lore.
- First name
- Personal name used in daily life and at the table.
- Apostrophe
- Marks a syllable break in many house surnames — not decoration.
- Full name
- First name plus house surname, typical for nobles and named rivals.
- Half-drow
- Mixed heritage; may drop the house or blend surface elf sound.
- Faction tone
- Lolth-sworn names feel heavier; Seldarine names can soften vowels.
First name, house name, full name
Three common formats cover almost every character.
| Format | Example pattern | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| First only | Zhaenrae | Rogues, exiles, low rank |
| House only | Baen'quel | Faction labels, DM notes |
| Full name | Zhaenrae Baen'quel | Nobles, PCs, named NPCs |
House names and the apostrophe
The apostrophe is a sound break, not decoration. It tells the reader how to split syllables. Keep house names stable across sisters, mothers, and daughters in the same line.
- Sisters share one house surname.
- Do not copy famous published house names.
- For a batch of house labels, use the city & house generator.
Female vs male drow names
Male and female drow names follow the same structure but different sound habits. Use the gender filter on the homepage, or the female drow generator for matriarchal bias.
| Female | Male | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Often longer | Often shorter |
| Sound | Formal, melodic | Sharp, hard stops |
| Typical roles | Matron, priestess | Warrior, mage, rogue |

Half-drow and mixed heritage
Half-drow grow up between surface and Underdark cultures. Names often mix a softer elven first name with an optional house surname if the Underdark parent was noble. If they were raised on the surface, skip the house entirely.
- Surface-raised: simple first name, no house.
- Underdark-raised: first name plus house possible.
- Use neutral or Seldarine faction on the homepage for softer blends.
Lolth-sworn vs Seldarine naming
Faction changes tone, not grammar. Lolth-sworn names feel colder and heavier. Seldarine names (common in BG3) can use lighter vowels because the character rejected Lolth. For BG3-specific help, see the BG3 name generator.

Common questions
-
How do drow names work?
First name for the person, optional house surname for the family. Nobles use both; exiles often use first name only. -
Why is there an apostrophe in house names?
It marks a syllable break so the name is easier to say aloud at the table. -
Where do I get male or half-drow names?
Male: homepage generator, gender Male. Half-drow: same tool with neutral or Seldarine tone — see the half-drow section above. -
Do female drow names need different rules?
Same structure, different sound — often longer and more formal. Try the female drow name generator for matriarchal cadence. -
Are these official or canon names?
No. Every name is an original combination. We block well-known canon characters and famous house names so you can use results safely in home games and fiction. -
Can I use these names in my game or story?
Yes, for personal creative use. This is a free fan-made tool, not a commercial product from Wizards of the Coast.
